Garage Skull

This is the first painting done in my new studio, which is actually my garage. I feel very fortunate to be able to acquire such a space. I thought this skull would be a good four hour project for my buddy Dan Catalano and I. I love painting with close friends, it is refreshing to see someone else's view on the same object. You can view Dan's painting on web.mac.com/dancatalano.

I like the lighting on this and I plan to continue painting under natural light.

In Progress

I didn't get as far a long as I wanted today. This 32 week fetal skull is being painted under natural light. I am focusing on losing edges and creating atmosphere.

Bum Shack

The small structure in this painting is a homeless person's weekend getaway. The shack is made out of an old shipping pallet and some found wood. It is located in the heart of Laguna Beach.

Keyhole Rock

The keyhole rock at the Montage in Laguna Beach is a popular sight. This is the second painting I have done of this spot. Painting this morning was quite an experience, the wind was howling and it almost started raining. I stuck it out and this is what I got.

Peacock

I've been painting outside everyday, so I decided to change it up. The peacock feather has been a reaccurring image in my life. It is a symbol of beauty, so I set it alone. We all try and achieve some kind of beautiful element. Try too hard you will be left alone.

Moss Point

A lot of my beach scenes look the same. I am working toward capturing the essence of what it feels like to wake up early and go down to an empty beach. The only way to achieve that is repetition. The air is salty and wet, the ocean is so vast it makes every attempt to let you know it's in charge. This painting was done at Moss Point in Laguna Beach. It was a great morning the tide was low enough so Sarah and I could find a decent spot to set up, drink our coffee and knock out a good painting.

Riviera Looking at State Beach

I used a limited palet known as the Zorn Pallet after Anders Zorn a great Swedish painter. It consists of white, yellow ochre, cadmium red, and black.

Riviera Looking at T-Street

I grew up surfing these breaks. I haven't painted in San Clemente as much as I should have, so I'm making up for lost time.

Crystal Cove III

I wasn't expecting the sun to be so hot when I painted this. The water looked so crisp and clean, but I prevailed and left with a sun burn and this fine little oil painting. These beach cottages are all gems.

Escondido

Downtown Escondido is under rated. There are so many cool allyways to paint. Colors and shapes for days.

Los Rios

Los Rios is the historical neigborhood in San Juan Capistrano. I have spent a lot of time there going to the mission or eating at restaurants. This particular cottage is the Moon Rose house, I love the weathered wood and the wild garden.

Forgotten Board

I had this board in my car, I had forgotten about it and found it coming back from painting. I decided to go back and do another and this is what I got. Its one of my favorites.

Fire In The Sky

The fires filled the skies with smoke. This was painted at Woods Cove around eight in the morning, on the same day Southern California was ablaze.

Grey Days

Grey days are my favorite. I love muted color and the moisture in the air. I had this tube of neutral grey from Holbein with me, it was the best grey I have ever used for this type of weather. Woods Cove Grey Morning.

Skull

Still Life. Evening seems to be time for the still life. What a piece of cake this was compared to being out on location. Outside you get ever changing shadows and light, bugs, and tourist. Inside, nothing, silence, controlled light, music. Ahhh, maybe my plein air days are up...no way.

Woods Cove

Woods Cove has been a comfortable place for me to paint, its never very crowded and there are numerous oportunities to find a descent composition. This is a small piece of Woods done with my special lady friend painting right next to me. Always a plus.

Crystal Cove

Crystal Cove is one of those plein air dreams, every time I go down there it's hard to decide what to paint. This one is right next door to the red roof. I liked the little blue house because it looked like something Dr. Suess would have drawn. The rooms are stacked on each other in the funniest collage of carpentry I have ever witnessed.

Greetings

Greetings,
My name is Noah Thorne. I live in Southern California and studied drawing and painting at the Laguna College of Art and Design. Currently I am inspired to paint the historical area's in Southern California. The Crystal Cove bungalow's have been a popular subject for Plein Air painters for decades. Painting the delapidated cottages makes for great imagery. Feelings of pride and tradition fill my mind being on location recreating these beach scenes. The history that crystal cove has as an artist muse is rightly appreciated.
